The Cowboy Dan Sportsmanship Award

In Loving Memory of Daniel J. Hoegler

Daniel J. Hoegler was a true cowboy — fearless, selfless, and full of heart. An avid horseman and lifelong supporter of the equestrian world, Dan was known for his courage, compassion, and unwavering dedication to both his family and the sport he loved.

On the day of his own wedding, Dan and his wife volunteered at the Athletic Equestrian Nationals — a testament to his deep commitment to the community. The very next day, he stood calmly by her side as she competed, offering quiet strength and support. That was the spirit of Cowboy Dan: show up, stay strong, and lift others up.

This award honors Dan’s legacy by recognizing an Athletic Equestrian League member who embodies his cowboy spirit — through dedication to the sport, the horses, and their team. Someone who gives without expecting anything in return. Someone who leads with kindness, rides with bravery, and stands tall when others need them most.

Any team member (coach or athlete) may nominate an Athletic Equestrian League Athlete for the Cowboy Dan Sportsmanship Award. To Nominate a Team Member please write up a 1 to 2 paragraph nomination sharing how the athlete exemplifies the sportsmanship and cowboy qualities we all knew and loved in Dan. Please send all nominations to: kellyhoegler@gmail.com

Nominations are Due: Friday May 2nd, 2025 to give family time to review.

All nominations will be reviewed by members of Dan’s family. The top 3 to 5 nominations will be shared during the Athletic Equestrian League Nationals, and the award will be presented by the family on the final day.

If the selected athlete is not present, the award will be mailed to them.

Let’s honor Dan by recognizing those who carry his spirit forward — in and out of the arena.
